Washington State dominated Pacific coast football during the 1930 season, but sorely needed a victory over Oregon State. A triumph would carry the Cougars a step closer to the Rose Bowl, but the two clubs were locked in a close contest. Then it happened! Junior tackle "Turk" Edwards intercepted an Oregon State pass and returned it for a score and a winning 14-7 margin. The Cougars finished the season with a perfect 9-0 record and a trip to Pasadena and the Rose Bowl for a meeting with Alabama. Although State lost to the Tide, 24-0, in the annual classic, Edwards and teammate Mel Hein became the first Cougar All-Americas. Edwards was blessed with speed and quickness that belied his 6-2, 258-pound frame. Edwards and Hein harassed enemy teams throughout that 1930 campaign. During Edwards' career in the Crimson and Grey of State, the Cougars were 25-7. Following his collegiate years, Edwards went on to star with the Washington Redskins and was eventually inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
