The Cornell team was going nowhere in 1895, the second year under head coach Marshall Newell. No one was paying much attention to the Big Red as Cornell struggled to a 3-4-1 record. It was a wonder, then, that Caspar Whitney would venture to faltering Cornell to find a quarterback for his All- America team that year. There was Clint Wyckoff, an intense little athlete with deep-set eyes that flashed with football flair. He was an imaginative athlete who richly deserved the honor of becoming Cornell's first All-American. To the pollster Casper, there was good reason to add Wyckoff to a backfield listing which included eventual Hall of Famers Brink Thorne (Yale) Art Brewer (Harvard) and George Brooke (Pennsylvania). Clinton Wyckoff was as intense in his studies as he was in his football adventures and he graduated from Cornell with a degree in Law. After college he went on to become one of Buffalo's leading industrialists and continued to serve as president and treasurer of the Atlas Steel Casting Company until his death at age 72.
