Jerry Rhome played one year at Southern Methodist, 1961. After a 2-7-1 season, he transferred to Tulsa. His coach, Glenn Dobbs, stressed a wide-open passing attack. Tulsa went 5-5 in 1963, and Rhome was third in the nation in total offense and third in passing. In 1964, he led the nation in total offense and passing. His main target, Howard Twilley, led the nation in pass receptions. Tulsa had a 9-2 year, including a 14-7 victory over Mississippi in the Bluebonnet Bowl. In 1964, Rhome threw 32 touchdown passes, including seven in a game with Louisville. His completion percentage was .687. He completed 35 passes for 488 yards against Oklahoma State. He made All-America, was named Player of the Year by the Academy of Sports Editors, the Washington Touchdown Club, and the Knute Rockne Club. He received the Walter Camp Trophy and was runner-up in the Heisman vote. Tulsa retired his jersey, No. 17. Rhome played pro 1965-71 with Dallas, Cleveland, Houston and the Los Angeles Rams. He launched a career as assistant coach -- first with Tulsa 1973-75, then with pro teams in Seattle, Washington, San Diego, Dallas, Phoenix, Minnesota, Houston and St. Louis. Rhome was born March 6, 1942, in Dallas, Texas.
