Chic Harley lit the fire and Pete Stinchcomb fanned the flame to a blazing football tradition at Ohio State. Harley had been the Buckeyes' first consensus All-America and brought OSU the first victory over arch rival Michigan. Stinchcomb would carry OSU to the first of many Rose Bowl appearances. Although a lightweight at 165 pounds, Stinchcomb was a halfback blitz, quick and shifty as he made his way through enemy defenses. Stinchcomb led Ohio State through a perfect seven-game regular season as a senior in 1920. The Buckeyes' success drew the 1921 Rose Bowl game. Gaylord Stinchcomb's nickname was "Pete"; he played at Ohio State 1917, 1919, 1920, with one year out for military service. He was on the Ohio State basketball and track teams and was intercollegiate long jump champion in 1921. He played with five teams in the National Football League 1921-26, then went into the construction business in Findlay, Ohio.
