University of Washington football fortunes were locked in the doldrums as the Roaring Twenties faded into the Troublesome Thirties. The Huskies would win only six of 20 Pacific Coast Conference games over the 1929, 1930 and 1931 seasons, as most foes found Washington easy to mark. But within these ashes of defeat glowed an ember of individual brilliance. It was the play of tackle "Schweg" Schwegler, a native of Raymond, Washington, who had become a Huskie with the express purpose of helping his state university reverse the trend. Despite Washington's lack of success, selectors were unable to overlook Schwegler, naming him to no less than 43 collegiate all-star teams. It seemed a paramount tribute to a player whose varsity career spanned three seasons in which the Huskies struggled to a 12-13-2 record. As a senior in 1931, his driving inspiration was recognized as he was named captain of the Huskie team and recipient of its coveted Flaherty Medal in recognition of his leadership. He was a first team All-America choice that year as well, and went on to be named the defensive standout of the West squad in the 1932 East-West Shrine game.
