Dick Colman first hit the headlines at Williams College as a 1935-36 letterman in six sports - football, baseball, basketball, lacrosse, swimming and skiing. Charlie Caldwell, the Williams coach, signed him as an assistant, continuing an association that would finally cover 25 years. When Caldwell moved to Princeton, 1945, Colman went along as assistant. When Caldwell became ill, 1957, Colman replaced him as head coach. Caldwell called Colman "one of the most astute theorists in the game" and credited him with much of the success of Princeton's unbeaten teams of 1950 and 1951. As head coach, Colman had a 75-33 record and won four Ivy League titles. His 1964 team went 9-0. He left Princeton to become athletic director at Middlebury College. He died in 1982 at age 67.
