James Johnson played college football seven years. His first stint was at Carlisle Indian School 1899-1903, and he was named All-America quarterback in 1903 by Walter Camp. Camp based his selection on a remarkable game he witnessed when Carlisle played Harvard. Johnson was small but fiery, and was a leader. He was Carlisle captain in 1903. He enrolled at Northwestern University's School of Dentistry and played on Northwestern's 1904-05 teams. In 1904 he scored a touchdown and helped beat Illinois 12-6 in the last game played at Sheppard Field. In 1905 he helped dedicate a new field, seating 13,000, on Central Street in Evanston, Illinois, as Northwestern beat Beloit 18-2. Johnson scored a touchdown and ran for 200 yards. He returned to Carlisle as assistant coach in 1906. Then he became a dental surgeon in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
