College football boasted a wealth of outstanding centers in the mid-1930s, but none were more expert and diagnostic at the position than Bob Herwig. He was All-America 1936-37; his California team was 10-0-1 in 1937. "An expert snapper and a first-rate tackler...he gets the edge over others of his caliber because of the 60-minute ball games he has played from start to finish," lauded the North American Newspaper Alliance's Board in making its choice. After graduation, Herwig earned a Masters degree at Arizona before serving in World War II. As distinguished in the military as he was on the gridiron, Herwig won the Navy Cross, the Silver Star and the Purple Heart with three Oak Leaf clusters for gallantry in action in the South Pacific. After the war, he returned to his love -athletics. He became a junior college baseball and football coach in California.
