One of the fabled stories concerning Georgia Tech football involves the tale of a Davidson player who, after hitting Georgia Tech's Bill Fincher, raced off the field to tell his coach, "I've done something awful, I've knocked out a man's eye." It is a legendary story about Georgia Tech's legendary one-eyed lineman, Bill Fincher. Years later Fincher admitted that he removed his porcelain eye before every game. Fincher played tackle and end for five seasons at Georgia Tech as the school did not count the abbreviated 1918 schedule a full season. Aside from excelling at two positions Fincher was also an excellent place kicker. In his 1916 freshman year, Fincher played in Georgia Tech's 222-0 victory over Cumberland. The 1917 team out-scored the opposition 491-17. A loss to Pittsburgh in 1918 ended a 33-game undefeated streak. Fincher was one of three Tech lineman to be named as a consensus All-America that season. He closed his career in 1920, again being honored as an All-America player.
