While a high school boy in Jersey City, New Jersey; Alex Weyand yearned for just one thing - an appointment to the United States Military Academy. There was no time for football heroics, only for dedicated study. Then, in 1911, Weyand was accepted at West Point and football gained one of the finest tackles ever to play in the East. An instant star, Alex became a three-time All-Eastern tackle and captain of the 1915 squad. Teammate Dwight Eisenhower, awed by Weyand's size (6-2, 198-pounds), teasingly nicknamed him "Babe." An all-around athlete, Weyand was a member of the United States Olympic Wrestling Team in 1920. He participated in basketball, ice hockey, boxing, fencing and swimming teams while at West Point. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant in 1916 and retired as a Colonel in 1946. During his long Army career, Weyand received numerous decorations, including the Silver Star and Purple Heart. Following his retirement from the military, "Babe" Weyand settled in Cornwall-On-Hudson, N.Y. - just 10 miles from his beloved West Point. He devoted himself to historical studies and became a prolific author. His writings include books on football, the Olympic Games and basketball. He lettered five years in football at Army.
