Gil Dobie, an excellent coach, was also a tenacious recruiter. When he departed Boston College in 1939, his team was inherited by Frank Leahy, who was moving from line coach at Fordham to his first head coaching assignment. Along with the renowned backs such as Charlie O'Rourke and Lou Montgomery, Dobie's legacy included two scrimmage line players who would win All-America honors: Center Chester Gladchuk, and 5-foot-10, 184 pound end named Goodreault. In 1939, Leahy's first season, Boston College rolled to a 9-2- 0 record. The Eagles held half of their opponents scoreless, held four to seven points or less and ran up 216 points on offense. Leahy's second Boston College season was sensational: a 11-0-0 record, 320 BC points to 52 opposition points and 6 shutouts. Fast, powerful and alert, Gene Goodreault was outstanding as a pass-catcher and play-maker blocker on offense and as a play-blaster, destructive tackler on defense. In 1940, Goodreault was a consensus All-America being named by Colliers, the All-America Board, the International News Service and the Association Press.
