Halfback Marchy Schwartz and quarterback Frank Carideo made Coach Knute Rockne's "last hurrah" at Notre Dame echo long and loud across the land. Schwartz was a sophomore when the Irish posted a 9-0-0 record in 1929, and a junior standout with the 10-0-0 team of 1930. They were years when Notre Dame dominated the nation's football. He logged a career 1,945 yards rushing for an average of 5.8 yards per carry. In 1930, Schwartz posted three straight 100- yard games - against Pitt, Indiana and Penn. In the 1931 game with Army, Schwartz punted 15 times for 501 yards, a school record which remained unbroken well into the second half of the 20th century. Schwartz played his senior season, 1931, under a new coach, Hunk Anderson, as Notre Dame posted a 6-2-1 record. He was head coach at Creighton 1935-1939 and Stanford 1942, 1946-50 (Stanford had no team 1943- 45). In 1962 a panel of sports writers and broadcasters picked an all-time Notre Dame team, and Schwartz was in the backfield along with George Gipp, Jim Crowley and Johnny Lujack. Schwartz was born March 20, 1909. He died in 1991.
