The fine Irish brogue of James J. Hogan would rise above the din. "Hard, Yale! Hard! Harder, Yale!" Hogan, son of County Tipperary, Ireland, became one of the greatest of Old Blue linemen and its inspirational force during the early years at the turn of the 20th Century. He became so much a part of Eli athletics that his classmates nicknamed him "Yale". Hogan was a broad-shouldered chap of 5-10 and 210-pounds who taunted enemy players with his leprechaun's smile. He had a powerful leg-drive and hit into the line like a hammer. He was often used as a ball-carrier on the old tackle-back play. Hogan lettered four years, was All-America three times and captain in 1904. Yale's record in his four years was 11-1-1, 11-0-1, 11-1, 10-1. That totals 43-3-2. Hogan was a Yale track standout also, and a top scholar who headed the debating team. On leaving Yale, he entered Columbia Law School and set up a practice in 1908. Two years later, Hogan died - a victim of Bright's disease.
