Tom Shevlin sneered at the use of head gear and nose guard and preferred to play it rough and ready on the field, flaunting a recklessness at opposing defenders which tore at their nerves. Yes, Shevlin was cocky, but he was more than able to back up his taunting words and actions. He was an incredible specimen of body muscle-tone who also threw the hammer and shot for the Yale track and field team. His great strength proved the perfect complement to his speed, intelligence and fighting spirit. During Shevlin's four varsity campaigns, the Elis rolled to an amazing 42-2-1 record. He captained the 1905 Blue and White squad that finished with a perfect 10 game record in a season when Yale out-scored the competition, 227-4. Princeton was the only club to score on Yale that year, as the Elis finished as co-National Champions with Chicago. Shevlin was a 5-10, 195-pound end who would try to knock the stuffings out of any opposing player. All America selector Walter Camp named Shevlin to the first team in three of the end's four fall campaigns.
