Offensively potent, defensively superb - these were the
trademarks of Homer Norton teams at Texas A&M from
1934 until 1947. This smiling, moon-faced man was a master
at winning big games; his overall record was 142-73-18 at
Centenary and A&M. Norton's 1939 squad outscored the
opposition, 198-18, in 10 games, and defeated Tulane, 14-13,
in the Sugar Bowl. Texas A&M was the national champion in
1939. A&M was co-champion of the SWC in 1940, sharing
the honor with Southern Methodist - and beating Fordham,
13-12, in the Cotton Bowl. The next season, 1941, the
Aggies won the SWC crown outright, but lost a Cotton Bowl
decision to Alabama, 29-21. Norton's 1943 team bowed to
Louisiana State in the Orange Bowl, 19-14. At College
Station, Norton led the Aggies to an overall record of 82-53-
9. His Centenary teams (1920-1921, 1926-1933) won 60 of
89 games. Among the many stars that Norton developed
were John Kimbrough and Joe Routt of A&M.
