Yale was at the crest of a 37-game winning streak and Princeton stood unbeaten in 10 games when the two met that afternoon in 1893. There was no question - the national championship would go to the winner of this final game of the season. Time after time, the Princeton defense responded to Yale scoring threats as a guard named Arthur "Beef" Wheeler led the charge. Yale's great end, Frank Hinkey, was rendered ineffective and the Elis streak ended with a 6-0 Princeton triumph. It was the only Yale loss during Hinkey's four-year playing career. Wheeler went on to become the key force in a Tiger line which held 26 of 35 opponents scoreless over the span of his playing days. The 1893 team did, indeed, lay claim to the national title. Wheeler was All-America all three years. Wheeler never played in the famous Princeton-Harvard rivalry. The series had been canceled.
