Ricky Hunley starred in baseball and football in high school at Petersburg, Virginia. The Pittsburgh Pirates offered him a baseball contract, but he turned it down and enrolled at Arizona. He won letters four years, was all-conference linebacker three years, made consensus All-America in 1982 and unanimous All-America in 1983. He had 31 games with 10 or more tackles and had 560 tackles in his college career. He was team captain in 1983. He played in the Blue-Gray Game, the Hula Bowl, and the Japan Bowl. Hunley played in the National Football League from 1984-90 with Denver, Phoenix and the Los Angeles Raiders. He also served as executive vice-president of the NFL Players Association. Hunley worked as assistant coach at Southern California in 1992. In 1993 he moved to Missouri as defensive line coach. In 1997 Ricky was promoted to assistant head coach by Missouri head coach Larry Smith, who was also his head coach in college at Arizona. He also founded the Ricky Hunley Football Camp, a non-profit instruction center for high school boys.
