Chuck Long was on the field for two plays in the Rose Bowl after the 1981 season. The NCAA did not count this as a season of eligibility. Long then spent four years as the starting quarterback for Iowa. The 1982 Iowa team was in the Peach Bowl, the 1983 team in the Gator Bowl, the 1984 team in the Freedom Bowl, and the 1985 team in the Rose Bowl. Long was named Offensive MVP in the Peach and Freedom Bowls. All told, he appeared in five bowl games, a record. In 1984, he set a national record by completing 22 consecutive passes against Indiana. In 1984, he led the nation in pass compoletion percentage, .661. In 1985, he won the O'Brien Trophy as the nation's best quarterback, the Maxwell Trophy as the nation's best player, and was unanimous All-America. He was runner-up to Bo Jackson of Auburn for the Heisman Trophy. The margin of vote between Long and Jackson was the smallest in the history of the Heisman. For the school year covering all sports 1985-86, Long was named the Big 10 Athlete of the Year. The NCAA record book credits him with career totals: 64 touchdowns, 692 completions, 9210 yards. If bowl games are added, these totals are 74, 782 and 10,461. He's the first man to pass 10,000 yards. Long played with the Lions, Packers and Rams in the NFL 1986-94.
