Steve Emtman was a highly motivated and intense defensive lineman. His physical play shut down opposing run offenses and his intensity made him a constant threat as a pass rusher. In high school Emtman was a well-rounded athlete who played in a basketball state final and was a two-time state champion in the discus. After a red shirt season, Emtman was a reserve in the defensive line making three starts his freshman year. In his first year as a starter he became a second team All-America choice and was named the co-defensive player of the year in the Pac-Ten. The Huskies went 10-2 and defeated Iowa in the Rose Bowl. Emtman won both the Lombardi and Outland trophies the following season and placed fourth in the Heisman voting. In his final collegiate game he was named the co-MVP of the Rose Bowl as the Huskies claimed a share of the national championship by completing an undefeated season easily beating Michigan 34-14. In that game Washington shut down Heisman Trophy winner Desmond Howard and limited the Michigan ground game to 74 yards. He closed his career with 14 sacks, and 134 tackles with 36 for loss. Steve was a three-time All-Conference player and a unanimous All-America The first selection of the 1992 draft by the Indianapolis Colts, Emtman?s pro career was limited to six seasons due to injuries.
