Joe Romig was a two-way player for Colorado, a guard on offense and linebacker on defense. He called defensive signals and was captain in 1961, when Colorado won the Big 8 Conference championship. Romig was all-conference three years and All-America two years. He stood 5-10 in height and weighed 199-pounds. Colorado retired his jersey, number 67, and in 1989 named him to its all-time team. In 1961 he was sixth in the voting for the Heisman Trophy, the highest ranking lineman on the list. Romig was a straight-A student his last three years in college. He finished with a 3.9 grade point average and was named one of the National Football Foundation's Scholar-Athletes. He received a Rhodes Scholarship and studied at Oxford, England, obtaining a master's degree in physics. He returned to Colorado and earned a doctor's degree in physics. He was a two-time Academic All-America and in 1987 received an NCAA Silver Anniversary Award for career achievement. Colorado established the Romig Award, based on performance by a player in spring practice each year
