Known as "Purple Streak," Benny Lee Boynton is Williams College's most famous football player. In his varsity career he engineered Williams to a record of 18 wins, five loses and one tie. The 1917 team was undefeated, upsetting larger schools such as Cornell and Columbia. Benny was a swift, elusive, strong-armed passer who won consensus All-America recognition in 1917 and 1919. In 1920 he led the Williams offense to some impressive scores. Against Wesleyan the Ephs scored 50 points, against Trinity 62, RPI gave up 63, and Hamilton yielded 82. After his collegiate career he signed with the Rochester Jeffersons of the National Football League. The Jeffs paid him $250 a game, tops for the day. In one game he sailed headfirst over a defensive lineman's head, landed neatly on his neck and shoulders, bounced quickly to his feet and ran 70 yards for a touchdown.
